All-in-One

Abeka Review

Abeka is a traditional, Christian-based curriculum that uses a fast-paced spiral approach to teach phonics, grammar, spelling, writing, reading, and literature. It relies on teacher-led, textbook-based instruction, places strong emphasis on grammar and sentence diagramming, and works best for average to advanced readers.

MIRA Scoring

This review looks at the program through the MIRA framework: Multisensory, Integrated Instruction, Rigor & Remediation, and Accessibility.  Click the button below to explore the criteria MIRA uses to conduct evaluations.

Multisensory:

⭐⭐⭐ Moderate

This program is moderate in multisensory instruction because it uses visual, auditory, & handwriting-based practice, in addition to flashcards, phonics charts, and games early on in PreK-2nd grade. However, Abeka does not provide enough active, reinforced practice and review for struggling readers who need more intensive direct support in later grades.

Integrated Instruction:

⭐⭐ Limited

Abeka is limited in integrated instruction because explicit reading instruction is only taught from preschool through 2nd grade.  While phonics, reading, writing, spelling, & comprehension are closely connected it does not continue this pattern for long enough with explicit phonics instruction, especially for struggling readers who need prolonged exposure to these concepts.

Rigor & Remediation:

⭐ Weak

Abeka is limited in rigor & remediation because it is very fast-paced and does not offer much built-in remediation if students struggle. It is overwhelmingly rigorous for a struggling reader, and does not build in enough scaffolding and review necessary to keep up with the intensity of the reading and writing workload. Abeka offers The Handbook for Reading for readers who continue to struggle, but it does not offer enough explicit intensive practice or review.  Its spiral approach is not a good fit for students who need time to master material before advancing to new concepts.

Accessibility:

⭐⭐ Limited

This program is limited in accessibility because it is not designed with dyslexic learners in mind. It is best suited for average to advanced readers. Families will have to supplement with their own additional continued practice and remediation programs; adjust the curriculum pace, type and length of reading and writing assignments; and implement accessibility tools on their own to accommodate a struggling reader.

Best For:

  • Families wanting: traditional format, advanced, rigorous all-in-one boxed Christian curriculum
  • Students needing: a fast-paced, challenging, spiral-approach curriculum
  • Parents looking for/comfortable with: Parent-led; Print-based textbooks (with Digital Versions Available)

Be Aware:

  • May need: Significant interventions/modifications to curriculum for struggling readers
  • May not be enough: Review; Slow enough pace
  • Parent Involvement: Teacher-directed; Web-based lessons available

Bottom Line

Overall, this curriculum is a limited fit within the MIRA framework. It works best for average to advanced readers. Abeka provides explicit phonics and structured reading instruction only up through second grade, and does not offer enough intervention, flexibility and built-in support for struggling readers who need more intensive remediation. It works best for average to advanced readers. Families of struggling readers should expect to supplement with separate additional resources and interventions, as well as modify pace, assignments, and workload, as necessary. This is a better fit for typical readers than for struggling readers or students with dyslexia.
