MIRA Scoring
This review looks at the Independent Component program through the MIRA framework: Multisensory, Integrated Instruction, Rigor & Remediation, and Accessibility. Click the button below to explore the criteria MIRA uses to conduct evaluations.
Multisensory:
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong
Logic of English is strong in multisensory instruction – students actively and continuously see, hear, say, trace, and write throughout the program. Students utilize finger-spelling; flash cards for phonograms, grammar rules, and spelling rules; tactile cards for touching & tracing; letter tiles; and interactive games to learn concepts and to provide active, reinforced practice for students who need direct support.
Integrated Instruction:
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong
Logic of English is strong in integrated instruction because it weaves phonemic awareness, phonics, reading, spelling, handwriting, vocabulary, grammar, basic composition, and comprehension across its curriculum explicitly and purposefully.
Rigor & Remediation:
⭐⭐⭐ Moderate
This program is moderate in rigor and remediation because it explicitly, systematically, and intensively teaches phonograms and spelling rules, and includes regular assessments and review. It serves both as a structured reading program for typical learners as well as an intervention for students with continued reading struggles. Foundations for 4-7 year-olds has two entry points, and Essentials for 8+ has 3 levels of differentiated learning, in addition to providing a review of Foundations. There are also three pacing options for both Foundations and Essentials. It does not offer literature, or a full writing curriculum, and therefore is not as robust as it could be.
Accessibility:
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong
Logic of English has a particularly strong approach to accessibility because it provides a range of modes for learning systematically throughout the program for students with a range of needs and abilities. It offers two entry points for Foundations, three pacing options, and three levels of differentiation in Essentials. It is text based and highly scripted for parents, offers a digital teacher manual, and app for practice and review. It is best suited as a core language arts program for beginning readers, students across grade levels needing help with spelling, and as a parent-delivered intervention for struggling readers.
Best For:
- Families wanting: A highly explicit, integrated literacy program grounded in phonics, spelling, & language structure
- Students needing: A parent-led curriculum that can double as intervention in reading & spelling through High School
- Parents looking for/comfortable with: Parent-led; Print-based, Digital Version Available
Be Aware:
- Does not Include: Literature program
- May not be enough: Explicit writing instruction, especially for Upper Elementary – High School
- Parent Involvement: Strong structure, scripted; Parent-led – not an independent curriculum
Bottom Line
Overall, this curriculum is a very strong fit within the MIRA framework. Because it is both an excellent foundational reading program for beginning readers, and so well-suited to helping struggling readers with reading and spelling simultaneously, it has earned MIRA’s rare CERTIFIED badge. It is not a complete language arts program, however, and families will need to supplement with additional literature and a more in-depth writing program.
